This pickup is specially designed for amplifying steel strings, springs and metal things. It also picks up electromagnetic fields with a higher gain than the standard inductor coil that comes with the SoundSniffer kit.
A pickup is essentially a coil of wire wrapped around a magnet. This creates a magnetic field concentrated around the magnet. When ferrous metals such as a vibrating string are within range, the field is disturbed creating fluctuations in AC voltage output which is amplified by the Coil input on the SoundSniffer (or other preamp such as a field recorder or audio mixer). These pickups can be used on musical instrument, or using the magnet to attach to ferrous metal, can act similarly to contact microphones.
Single coil pickups by their design are susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI), which is only a problem if you aren't sniffing for those sounds. (A humbucking version is coming very soon if EM is not desired.)
